DeSantis vs. Newsom on Violent Crime

New FBI data shows a sharp divergence in their records on public safety.

DeSantis vs. Newsom on Violent Crime

Gavin Newsom hasn't announced his presidential bid for 2024 yet. However, he agreed to participate in a Fox News debate with Florida Governor. Ron DeSantis. Their respective economic records will be a good topic, but they also need to spend time discussing public safety.

This week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation released statistics for 2022. The headline stated that violent crime had decreased by 1.7% and was now at the same level it was before the pandemic. It's a large country and the averages do not tell the full story. California's violent crime has risen 13% in the last year. In Florida, it is down by 31.5%. In Mr. Newsom’s state, the rate of violent crimes was 499.5 per 100 000 people last year. This is nearly twice that in Mr. DeSantis’s jurisdiction, which was 258.9 per 100 000.
