A photographer spent years memorializing some 300 sites of fatal police shootings across America

In 2015 and 2016, there were over a thousand deaths related to interactions with law enforcement officials in the US. Photographer Diana Matar embarked on a project to document these deaths in four states: California, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. She visited over 300 locations where people had died and captured monochromatic images of everyday sites. The photographs are accompanied by minimal biographical information to emphasize the humanity of the individuals. Matar’s work aims to provide space for contemplation and reflection on the issue of police violence in the country.
