CVS and Walgreens have obtained certification to dispense mifepristone, a pill used in medication abortion. They will offer the medicine in states where it is legal. CVS plans to start filling prescriptions in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with intentions to expand to other states over time. Walgreens expects to begin dispensing mifepristone in select locations in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California, and Illinois. Both pharmacy chains already dispense misoprostol, the other medication involved in medication abortion. Medication abortion is the most common method in the US and is approved for use up to 10 weeks into pregnancy. The Supreme Court is considering restrictions on mifepristone, with a decision expected by July. The FDA updated guidelines in January 2023 to allow certified pharmacies to dispense the drug. President Joe Biden welcomed the news and voiced support for access to mifepristone.
