Food Supplier Recalls Onions Linked to E. Coli Outbreak and McDonald's Quarter Pounders

A recent multistate E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald's Quarter Pounders has prompted a major recall of onions. Although the outbreak's source isn't definitively confirmed, initial investigations suggest the onions served atop the burgers as a likely contamination source. Taylor Farms, the onion supplier for these McDonald's locations, has issued a recall for its yellow onion products due to potential contamination concerns.
Restaurants have been instructed to cease serving and destroy the specified onion products. McDonald's has temporarily stopped using slivered onions and halted Quarter Pounder sales in multiple states, though other menu items remain unaffected.
This strain of E. coli is particularly concerning as it can lead to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, a severe condition damaging kidney blood vessels, especially in children. Outbreak investigations continue, involving several health agencies. Historically, beef was more often implicated in such outbreaks, but increased food safety measures have reduced its involvement.
