Leonard Hayflick, a renowned biomedical researcher, passed away at the age of 98 at his home in Sea Ranch, Calif. His contribution to science came with the accidental discovery in the early 1960s. While working at a research organization, he observed that nonreproductive cells undergo a limited number of divisions before entering a state known as senescence. Hayflick concluded that the accumulation of senescent cells leads to the aging and decline of the body, with cancer cells being exceptions to this process.
