Meat from a dairy cow culled from its herd and sent to slaughter has tested positive for traces of the H5N1 bird flu virus, according to the US Department of Agriculture. The cow’s meat, however, did not enter the food supply. The USDA detected viral particles of H5N1 during standard testing of various tissues. H5N1 is a highly pathogenic form of bird flu that can infect humans and cause fatalities. The virus has been found in the milk of dairy cows, causing mastitis. Experts are concerned that sick animals may be going undetected, and further testing is underway.
