More individuals are using marijuana during pregnancy to alleviate symptoms like nausea, pain, stress, and sleep disorders, with usage more than doubling in the past twenty years. However, research indicates that marijuana use during pregnancy can have adverse effects on both the mother and the baby. A recent study found that using cannabis during early pregnancy increases the risk of serious complications for the mother, including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and placental abruption. Additionally, marijuana use in early pregnancy is associated with inadequate or excessive weight gain. Experts recommend discussing cannabis use during pregnancy with healthcare providers and limiting or quitting its use for the well-being of both mother and child.
