It’s hard to believe today, but just 20 years ago the issue of same-sex marriage divided the country and drove voter turnout. The vast majority of Americans opposed same-sex marriage in 2004. There was verifiable backlash to marriage equality as voters in 11 states codified in their constitutions that marriage should be between a man and a woman. However, public opinion has since shifted significantly. More people now identify as LGBTQ, and a strong majority of Americans support same-sex unions. The fight for LGBTQ rights continues, with transgender rights being a current focus.
